Dongara & Port Denison Attractions
Fishermans Lookout
Point Leander Drive,( near Leander Point ) Port Denison.
One of only two remaining obelisks built in 1869. From the lookout you get a
panoramic view of the fishing boat harbour and Point Denison.
Dongara Cemetry
A remarkable look back at the early times of the district. Some of
the headstones date back to 1874 and there is also a Remberance Wall
dedicated to the Dominican nuns from the era. Self-guided tour brochures
available from the Visitors Centre.
Russ Cottage
Built in the late 1860's and adjacent to the Irwin River, this historical
cottage has been restored to as original as possible. There is a water
mark near the front door showing the height that the Irwin River rose
in 1971.
Old Dongara Police Station
Built in 1870 and restored by local volunteers ,
this 1870 building made of now houses the museum and the
Historical Society. Visitors can see local arts & crafts as well
as a museum housed in the cells and adjoining area.
Bird watching
Dongara & Port Denison are a bird lovers paradise with a large number
of migratory birds and other magnificent birds. Viewing can be done from
many vantage points , including the Bird Hyde located on
the boardwalk at the rivermouth.
Live Lobster Facility
At a cost of $2.4 million this facility is considered the best
in the southern hemisphere and is situated on the marina. With a
holding capacity of 35,000 kilos of live lobster, this is sure to
make the most avid lover of crayfish drool with anticipation!
Open 7 days a week in season from 15th Nov ~ 30th June.
Wildflowers
From July through to October the region comes alive
with the display of Western Australian wildflowers, although
some species
are present all year round. The Everlastings are the first to appear
and can be found within an hours drive from Dongara Denison. Make
sure that the only souveniers that you leave with are pictures
as the picking of wildflowers is prohibited.
