Exmouth Attractions
Exmouth attractions are plentiful and there
is something to see and do for all age groups, all budgets and all different
interests.I have divided the attractions up into two categories;
land and sea.
Cape Range National Park.An amazing national park with 50kms of pristine beaches,
deep canyons and rugged limestone ranges. Wildlife is abundant with emus, red kangaroos
and euros. The northern boundary of the park is 40kms from the town of Exmouth.
The park is divided into the West and East sides.
West Side:
Mangrove Bay includes a bird hide which overlooks a lagoon area. A variety
of birds roost in the lagoon at high tide and many feed on small fish in the shallow
waters.
Milyering Visitors Centre
Milyering, the National Park Visitor centre is 52kms south of Exmouth.
Interpretive displays, audio-visual facilities and a library containing relevant
information on the area are here to assist visitors to the region.
Yardie Creek
Centuries of erosion have created a spectacular multi-coloured gorge. Local
'inhabitants' of Yardie are the black footed rock wallabies.
These timid creatures seek shelter on the ledges along the gorge walls, resting
during the day and feeding at night. There is a walk trail along the northern wall of
the gorge or you can join a boat cruise.
East Side
Shothole Canyon Road
16kms south of Exmouth on the Minilya Exmouth road is the turnoff to
Shothole Canyon. Named after the explosive charges set up to create miniature
earthquakes for seismographic studies during the oil searches in the 1950's.
There is a picnic area at the end of the 15km road and a short walking trail.
Charles Knife Canyon
23kms south of Exmouth you turn west off the Minilya Exmouth road into
Charles Knife Canyon. The road follows the knife edge ridges of the range and provides the
camera buff with ample opportunities for spectacular photos.
Beaches & Fishing
The Ningaloo coastline offers kilometre after kilometre of unspoilt , safe, clean beaches.
Whether your fancy is swimming, snorkelling, surfing or fishing; your needs
will be adequately catered for. A few of the more popular beaches are;
Town Beach
Located 1km from the township, this beach is ideal for morning walks
and beachcombing.
Bundegi Beach
Located 12kms north of Exmouth. Ideal for swimming, snorkelling and fishing.
There is a boat launch facility at the southern end of the beach.
Lighthouse Bay
Access tracks along the Mildura Wreck Road into Lighthouse Bay provide entrance
to numerous beaches ideal for swimming, fishing and sunbathing. At the end
of the road in the shallow waters lies the wreck of the SS Mildura. A
cattle ship destroyed on the reef during a cyclone in 1907.
Turtle Rookeries
During the summer months turtles come ashore to lay and hatch their eggs.
The best places to view this marvel are from Hunters Access down to Wobiri
Access. Be sure to pick up a "code of conduct" information sheet from CALM at
the Exmouth Visitors Centre.
Turquoise Bay
Located 60kms south of Exmouth is the aptly named Turquoise Bay. This crystal
clear lagoon offers white sandy beaches and access to great snorkel sites.
Vlaming Head Lighthouse & Lookout
Magnificent views of the North West Cape and the Ningaloo Reef are attainable
from the lighthouse lookout. Built in 1912 and now fully restored, this is
Australia's only kerosene burning lighthouse.
